The Blaser R8 is one of those rifles that look conventional until its action starts moving. Instead of lifting and rotating a traditional bolt, the shooter operates it in a straight line, revealing an engineering concept that is radically different beneath the surface. Its unusual locking system, modular construction, manual cocking mechanism, and barrel arrangement all contribute to its distinctive identity. 1. It Is a Straight-Pull, Not a Conventional Bolt

The R8’s most obvious secret is also the easiest to miss: its bolt travels straight back and forward rather than rotating like a conventional turn-bolt. That changes the rifle’s rhythm while retaining its bolt-action identity. The design uses a radial locking system at the barrel, so the bolt does not need a traditional set of rotating locking lugs. Blaser describes 14 locking surfaces engaging around the circumference, producing a 360-degree lockup. It is an unusual solution to a familiar bolt-action task.
